This was such a great talk. I'm gutted I was abroad and couldn't tune in.
If I had a penny for every time I've been told not to worry about pH in soil, I'd be a rich man, I'm so glad to hear you guys talk about that, because I did have an issue before.
I reused some living soil - in pots - a number of times, without really amending, but using organic nutrients. After crop 3, I hit real problems I couldn't solve and when I looked into it I found I had a real low pH in the soil and it was locking stuff out. So I balanced the inputs and guess what, it came good again.
I've been adding calmag for an age too, despite naysayers saying I shouldn't need to in soil. Well, that worked out too. Got my water analysed and it was super low calcium and almost no magnesium. I guess the soil should have sorted that or the nutes at least, but I guess not. Real world is sometimes different to bros or how things "should be".
Thanks for the no-nonsense advice. Great talk both and lovely to hear Jim talking about his techs, as I say, it reassures me I'm doing some things right :)
Thank you, Midge. Jim is such a technical grower, I always learn something from him. And yep, pH still gets me, in fact, it got me on this last round on one of my plants. Nutrient lockout and leaf drop, the plant’s gonna finish fine though after a good flushing. Jim’s advice on flushing to correct pH is spot on.
Yeah and with certain soils, using their lifecycle products (or your own if you are a guru) at the end of each crop - if you are reusing living / enriched soil - to ensure that they don't stop buffering over time can be a big deal.

Thanks again Michel.
